Behind the Build: Price vs. Value: Why the Lowest Bid Isn’t Always the Smartest Choice

When we first met with the homeowners for this 1970s renovation, they were doing what every client should do: getting multiple quotes. As the conversations unfolded, it became clear that other contractors were offering a lower price, but also a very different approach.

It’s always tempting, in that moment, to compete at the level of cost. But that’s not the Juxta way. Instead of asking how cheap can we make this? we asked how can we deliver the best value for what’s being invested?

For this project, value meant taking the house back to the studs, not for show, but for substance. The home was transitioning from an old water-heated boiler system to a modern forced-air heating and cooling setup, alongside upgraded, high-efficiency windows. These systems are only as effective as the shell that contains them. Without proper insulation and air sealing, the client would be spending thousands on efficiency upgrades that couldn’t perform to their potential.

So, we stripped it back. We opened the walls, sealed the gaps, and rebuilt the home’s envelope to meet modern standards. It’s an investment that pays dividends, in comfort, in performance, and in peace of mind.

Because in the end, price is just a number on paper. Value is what you live with every single day.

Tune in to hear GC Kellen discuss this important issue, and let us know if you’ve learned this lesson the hard way!

FAQ: What’s the Difference Between Price and Value in a Renovation?

Q: Why shouldn’t I just choose the lowest bid for my renovation?
A: A lower price can be appealing at first glance, but it often reflects corners being cut — either in materials, process, or long-term performance. At Juxta, we focus on value: ensuring that every dollar you spend contributes to a result that lasts, performs, and elevates your everyday living.

Q: What does “value” look like in a practical sense?
A: In this project, it meant taking the home back to the studs so it could be insulated and air-sealed properly before new systems went in. Without that step, the client would have been wasting energy and comfort — and eventually paying more to fix it later. True value shows up in your utility bills, in how your home feels, and in the fact that you don’t have to revisit the same problem twice.

Q: How can I tell if a contractor is offering real value or just a low price?
A: Ask them to explain why they’re recommending certain steps and what happens if those steps are skipped. A trustworthy design-build firm will be transparent about trade-offs, not just totals.
