Timeless Style, Modern Function: Inside This Three-Bathroom Remodel and (Plus a Staircase Refresh!)

Nineties to Now: A Trio of Bathroom Remodels That Balance Function and Forever Style

If you’ve ever lived with a 90s-era bathroom, you know the look: builder-basic finishes, bland styling, and not a lot of thoughtful storage. So when our clients came to us with not one but three bathrooms in need of a reboot, we knew it was time to bring these hardworking spaces into the present—with function, beauty, and timeless style leading the way.

This was a full interior design and construction collaboration, and the results speak to what’s possible when you pair great design with expert execution. We transformed a dated primary ensuite, a kids’ bathroom and created a guest bath by stealing some space from the storage room—each with its own personality, yet all speaking the same elevated language.

The Primary Ensuite: Warmth Meets Refinement

The goal was to design a bathroom that felt like a retreat without losing the cozy warmth of being home. We started with a custom white oak vanity—natural, warm, and timeless. Paired with vintage-inspired brass mirrors and lighting, the whole space hums with quiet luxury.

A hex tile floor adds a subtle pattern play, and a soft runner brings in that old-world texture we love. It’s elegant but grounded, a room you want to linger in—whether you’re rushing out the door on a weekday or soaking up a slow Sunday morning in your very own spa-like retreat.

Wall Paint: Benjamin Moore Navajo White

Let’s talk about this shade—a soft, orange-leaning beige that had everyone holding their breath when it first went up. Before the finishes were in, there was a flicker of panic. Was it too warm? Too beige? Were we veering into 90s territory—the exact vibe we were trying to leave behind?

But this became such a valuable reminder: trust the process. Wall colour isn’t chosen in isolation—it’s there to support and elevate the full story of the room. In this case, Navajo White was chosen deliberately to highlight the warmth of the wood tones and to offer a pretty, mellow contrast to the crisp, bright whites.

Once the vanity, shelving, and final styling were in place, any doubts disappeared. The colour settled into the space beautifully—cozy, balanced, and totally timeless. In the end, it was exactly right.

Where it Started..

Before – wasted space, assymetrical layout and a cavernous shower.

The Kids' Bathroom: Designed to Grow With Them

We didn’t want this space to scream “kids’ bathroom”—we wanted it to whisper it, thoughtfully. So we leaned into a look that’s playful, vintage-leaning, and totally timeless.

A vintage-inspired William Morris print shower curtain sets the tone—whimsical, botanical, and endlessly charming. We paired it with a warm wood-stained vanity, classic penny tile floors, and a clean white subway tile tub surround. It’s the kind of space that feels sweet for little ones but effortlessly cool as they grow up. No cartoon ducks required.

Wall Paint: Benjamin Moore Spanish Olive

If you’re newer to working with colour—or just naturally drawn to more muted palettes—earthy greens like olive or sage can be a beautiful bridge. They feel grounded and organic, almost like a neutral… just with a little more personality. A whisper of colour that plays nice with everything else without taking centre stage.

Where it Started...

Before – cool wood tones, another cavernous shower surround, and overall just lacking the personality required for a kids space!

The Guest Bathroom: Small but Mighty

This little jewel didn’t exist before our remodel. We stole square footage from a neighboring storage room off the basement guest room to carve out this space, proof that a well-designed home can always make room for better function.

With its soft greige tile in the shower and on the floor, a fresh coat of creamy paint, and that dreamy forest green vanity with brass hardware, this bathroom feels serene and sophisticated. The round mirror and yellow tulips were just the right punch of warmth and charm. It’s cozy but polished—perfect for making guests feel at home (and maybe a little bit spoiled).

Wall Paint: Benjamin Moore Dove Wing

Dove Wing is the perfect pick for anyone feeling a little hesitant about the rise of the New Beige. You know the look—warmer, softer, less stark than the cool greys of the last decade. If you’re warming up to warm tones (pun absolutely intended), Dove Wing is your gentle on-ramp.

What makes it special? It has just a hint of violet undertone, which lets it straddle that lovely middle ground between beige and grey. Not too yellow, not too cool—just right. It’s stunning on cabinetry (as seen here and here) and equally gorgeous as an all-over wall colour in a main living space. Soft, elegant, and quietly on trend.

Where it Started...

Before – This bathroom started as… well, nothing. Just an unfinished storage room tucked off the guest bedroom. With no existing bathroom in the basement, carving one out here made perfect sense. The only catch? No window—since none of the walls were exterior-facing. But with smart lighting, soft paint tones, and a well-balanced layout, the finished space feels anything but dark.

Additional Details

Beyond the bathrooms, we also helped the homeowners refresh their upstairs hallway and bedrooms – lighting, carpet and paint – proof that small design decisions can have a big impact. The original staircase had the classic 90s-style carpet wrap with rounded nosing, and while a full stair rebuild wasn’t in the cards just yet, we had a clever workaround. We created a custom trim detail that allowed the new carpet to die into a clean edge rather than wrap around it. This simple change helped modernize the stairs without the expense of structural modifications.

A fresh coat of paint on the handrail and posts tied it all together.  And the kids got sweet, personality-packed hues for their rooms that feel age-appropriate now but have enough longevity to grow with them.

This phase of the project is such a great example of thoughtful, strategic design: making the most of the budget by choosing updates that balance function, form, and future planning.

Wall Paint: SW 6016 Chaise Mauve

A quick moment of appreciation for Sherwin Williams Chaise Mauve—the dreamiest whisper of mauve we used in this sweet little girl’s room. It’s soft without being saccharine, with just enough dusky undertone to feel sophisticated (even in a space filled with stuffies and storybooks).

Proof that pretty can still feel elevated—and that colour in kids’ rooms doesn’t have to shout to shine. 💗

Wall Paint: SW 9130 Evergreen Fog

Sherwin Williams Evergreen Fog is one of those magical in-between colours that feels equal parts grounded and serene. It’s a soft green with a touch of gray and just the faintest whisper of warmth—making it an incredibly versatile choice for someone who wants a bit of colour without committing to bold.

We love it in spaces where you want a sense of calm with a hint of character—think bedrooms, offices, even a moody mudroom. It pairs beautifully with warm woods, creamy whites, aged brass, and natural textures like linen or cane.

What makes it extra special is how it shifts with the light. In the morning, it feels airy and fresh; by evening, it deepens into something cozier and more cocoon-like. It’s subtle but never flat, soft but never boring.

It’s one of those paints that makes a space feel designed, even before you’ve styled a single thing.

Why Design + Build Matters

Here’s the truth: achieving a high level of function and beauty doesn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of thoughtful planning, expertise at every level, and a seamless partnership between design and construction—a team that’s considering layout, flow, and finishes long before the first sledgehammer swings. Every square inch is intentional, and we’re not limited to stock selections or cookie-cutter solutions. The result? Spaces that are not only beautiful, but deeply tailored to how you live.

By working with a full-service design-build team, these clients didn’t have to choose between practical and pretty. They got both—with a process that felt far more cohesive and less stressful than managing it all on their own. Remodels always come with their curveballs, but having one team guiding the vision and execution made all the difference.

Plus, an unstyled remodel is like hitting a home run but staying on 3rd!  See how we took it home in this reel!
