Project Reveal with 4 Tips on Timeless Design for your Next Reno!

Take my 90s home and make her timeless
This was the ask from our wonderful clients #houseonmissionhill and I believe we delivered! I’ll take you through 4 important choices to create a timeless interior, and then soak in all the before and after photos and let you be the judge!
4 tips for a timeless remodel
- Warm neutrals – historical homes lean warm in their neutrals – think cream or beige over grey or stark white.
- Warm metals – brass, champagne gold, bronze or nickel are your most timeless metals, again, due to their warm undertone.
- Ornate details – opt for a profile on your crown moulding and base and case. Flat stock is a more modern choice.
- Classic hard finishes – anything that gets permanently installed such as flooring, tile, quartz, etc should keep a classic profile – think subway tile, veining that isn’t overly dramatic, neutral/warm wood tones for a few examples.
The Kitchen - Before and After

The result? A warm white kitchen as beautiful as their view that they can now fully take in without the bulky fireplace in the way! Psst we also replaced the single patio door with french doors – let there be light!

Powder Bath - Before and After
The powder bath is your opportunity to make a statement! As a room you only spend a few moments in at a time, you’ll never tire of a bold move. It’s like the pocket square of a house – this is your permission to colour drench, or apply a wallpaper or picture moulding etc. The cost won’t be astronomical given it’s such a small space, but the impact will be huge! Plus, it’s a room your guests get to interact with, so showcase your personality, you’ll get such credit!

Laundry Mudroom - Before and After
This combo room was a waste of precious space. The new design incorporates floor to ceiling cabinetry so all the many utilitarian items have an easily accessible home, behind a closed cabinet door.

Railing and Front Door - Before and After

After

I loved elevating this railing with a decorative baluster on every third. The wood pieces are white oak to match the flooring. We also did a custom stain to match the flooring.
You’ll notice we ran the hardwood floor into the entry, for a more seamless look. Unless you’re super dressy, or you’re really hard on your entry floors, this is a pretty way to go. Also, more cost effective than tiling.
We also modernized the front door by flattening the 90s arch and doing clear glass and a stained fiberglass door. Also, a cost savings compared to solid wood, and seriously, you’d be hard-pressed to tell it wasn’t authentic wood – it has the wood grain and everything!
